The official Notion Web Clipper silently truncates long articles, drops clips made offline, and forces you to open the page in Notion before you can tag it. Save to Notion is better but doesn't fix the truncation issue and adds its own UX friction. Clipsage rebuilds the workflow around the most-cited complaints in both products' Chrome Web Store reviews.
Locally in your browser. Your Notion integration token lives in chrome.storage.local — we never see it. When you clip, the article content goes directly from your browser to Notion's API. Optional AI tagging is the one exception: article text is sent to Anthropic's Claude API via our proxy (which never logs request bodies), tags come back, and nothing is retained.
Clipsage chunks long articles into multiple API calls so the full content lands in Notion. We verified this against the Wikipedia 'Mozilla' page (360 blocks): the official clipper drops about 70% of the content silently; Clipsage clips all 360 blocks.
It's saved to a local IndexedDB queue and synced automatically when your connection returns. The popup shows 'Saved offline'; the Options page shows a list of pending clips with Send-all-now / per-item retry. The chrome.alarms drain runs every 5 minutes plus on browser startup.
By default it picks ONLY from your existing tag taxonomy. If the article doesn't fit any of your existing tags, it suggests new ones below the property editor — you decide whether to add them to your database. We use Claude Haiku 4.5 for cost + speed; the prompt enforces strict JSON output limited to your provided tag list.

The Anthropic API key would be extractable in minutes if it lived in the extension. The Worker holds the key, validates the user's subscription, forwards the request, and rate-limits per user. At 1000 paying users we expect ~$37.50/month in Claude API costs — well under 1% of MRR.

Every site that renders HTML in the DOM (so: not pure PDF viewers or single-canvas apps). We use Mozilla Readability as the base extractor with site-specific overrides for Stack Overflow, GitHub markdown, Reddit, Medium, dev.to, and Substack to dodge known Readability misfires.
Chrome first because of distribution mass (Chrome Web Store reach >70% of desktop browsers per StatCounter as of May 2026). Edge is automatic — Edge accepts Chrome Web Store extensions. Firefox port is a 1-2 day effort and will ship if Chrome traction is real.
Not currently — Clipsage is a commercial product. We may open-source the Notion-blocks converter (it's useful infrastructure for other indie Notion tools) once we're confident in the API surface. The privacy model is local-only: your data never goes to our servers, so the OSS-vs-closed question matters less than it would for a server-side product.
